COUNTY Counties are comprised of the state subdivisions that make up the Memphis MSA as defined in 2013 and include Shelby, Fayette, and Tipton counties in Tennessee; Crittenden county in Arkansas; Benton, Desoto, Marshall, Tate, and Tunica counties in Mississippi. | CITY Cities are defined using the U.S. Census Bureau's Census Designated Places (CDPs), statistical representations of incorporated locations. Statistical data are linked via a 5-digit FIPS code (Federal Information Processing Series) while geographic data are summarized by intersecting geographic features against location boundaries. | ZIPCODE Zip Code boundaries utilize the U.S. Census Bureau's ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs) which are approximations of the U.S. Postal Services (USPS) ZIP Code service areas. The Census Bureau designates zip code boundaries by selecting all Census Blocks that whose addresses contain a single ZCTA. Census Blocks that contain multiple ZCTA are assigned a zip code through a buffering process performed by the U.S. Census Bureau. |
CENSUS TRACT Census tracts are statistical boundaries developed by the U.S. Census Bureau in order to report statistical information geographically and typically have a population between 1,200 and 8,000 people. While tracts are relatively static, they do occasionally change in the event of an increase or decrease in population. | MSA The Memphis MSA, or Metropolitan Statistical Area. MSAs are Core Based Statistical area (CBSAs) that have a core urbanized area with at least 50,000 people. An MSA is comprised of the central county that contains the core urban area as well as all adjacent counties that are linked to that county through social or economic ties, typically measured by commuting patterns. |
